Portfolio Activity 3

For this portfolio activity, I decided to write my website review on http://www.slaveryinnewyork.org/.

After taking the time to explore their website, overall I feel as though they did a pretty good job with everything. To begin, when you enter the website they welcome you with a well made front page that makes you want to continue on and learn more. It is not boring looking, and has a few bright colors that stand out to the eye.

Once you click past the welcome page, the content of the website includes a virtual tour of slavery in the past of New York as well as other tabs that include information about the exhibit and its history. This tour includes a slave-built colonial outpost, ads for many runaway slaves, information about emancipation, and multiple visuals to help explain some of the information. The point of view is one that is only for educational purposes as everything written is factual with primary sources included. The information is very easy to interpret and this made me want to continue further into my dig for information.

The way the site is set up makes it very easy to navigate through information and understand the topics at hand. There is a side bar with multiple tabs that are easy to get to, and under each tab there are even smaller categories to make it even easier. Once you go into one of these categories, the ones with more information are divided up into even smaller sections to make the reading easier.

As stated before, the audience for this website is anyone who may want to learn about slavery in New York. This is stated on the front page of the website and anyone looking for this information can find it easily.

I really liked how they incorporated a tour into the website as it gives the website a museum like feel. This is very different than many other informational websites and made it fun for me to learn.

The New York Historical Society (N-YHS) created this website and their society in general for the general public to learn about the slavery that occurred in our own country.
