For portfolio activity 7 I created a storymap that describes the life and escape from slavery of a man who lived in the United States named Henry Brown. The storymap that I created is shown below.
To create my storymap for this assignment, I decided to use StoryMapJS. I made the decision to use this software because I liked the format with the map bringing you to each city as you click through the story. After looking through the options for a person to write about, the story of Henry (Box) Brown stood out to me as the most interesting. I felt like I could create a storymap that highlights the significant steps in Browns life and freeing. I decided not to add too many slides because I felt too much would be overwhelming, but I added enough to get the story told well. When thinking about how to make this map, I wanted to focus on making it easily understandable by anyone who may be looking through it. It makes it very hard to get data from something that is formatted in a way that is not organized well.
Looking back on completing this map, I feel as though it was very simple and easy to learn how to do. It did not take much time to understand the website as they explain very well how to use each tool that they offer. I feel as though the turnout of my map was very similar to what I wanted, but could have a few changes to make it look better. Some of the pictures I used were very similar to each other because there are not many different photos or drawings of Brown on the internet. If I dug a little bit deeper I think I could find something that fits better for a few of the images I used.
